Big Stone County, located in the western side of Minnesota, has a population of 5,166 as per the 2020 census, with Ortonville being its county seat. It was formed in 1862 and organized in 1874.
The county's southwest boundary shares a line with South Dakota, and the Little Minnesota River flows along its southwestern boundary. A dam called the Big Stone Lake Dam, built in 1937, has impounded the river's waters, creating Big Stone Lake. The water flowing out from the lake flows along the south boundary line of the county and is known as the Minnesota River. Fish Creek flows southwest through the county's northwestern part and flows into Big Stone Lake at the county's southwestern boundary.
The terrain of Big Stone County is characterized by low rolling hills that are either wooded or used for agriculture. The land generally slopes towards the south and east, while the southwestern portion slopes towards the river valley. The highest point in the county is located on its north line, about 2.9 miles (4.6 km) east of Lagoona Beach, at 1,201 feet (366m) ASL. The county has a total area of 528 square miles (1,370 km2), of which 499 square miles (1,290 km2) is land and 29 square miles (75 km2) (5.5%) is water.

The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Depot in Clinton, Minnesota, United States, is an iconic railway station that has been a significant part of the area's history. Constructed in the early 1900s, the depot was initially known as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Depot, and it played a crucial role in connecting the people of Clinton to other parts of the country.
Over time, the station fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. However, it was rescued from demolition in the 1970s by a group of concerned citizens who recognized its historical significance. The station underwent extensive renovations and was transformed into a local history museum, now known as the Clinton Depot.
In 1985, the depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance in local history. The interior of the depot boasts beautiful hardwood floors and decorative wainscoting in the waiting room, with an office in the middle and a freight room located at the south end. Visitors can explore the museum's extensive exhibits, which include military memorabilia, farm and agriculture displays, train memorabilia, and a range of photos, posters, newspapers, and historic items about Clinton.
